A Michaela Kaden Novel

The Unthinkable

The Unthinkable was the first modern-day story I wrote. I grew up on a horse ranch and was force fed westerns, especially John Wayne, until I started begging for more. Which wasn’t long.    So, when I started writing, my first four books were westerns. Currently, they are on a thumb drive with more dust than I could ever clean away, and that is where they will stay. They were part of my journey of learning to write. Not for public consumption.   Eventually, I decided if I wanted to write and sell books, I should consider a more modern and popular genre.   At that time, I was addicted to NCIS, James Patterson, Robert B. Parker, and Stephen Hunter. So, I made the transition from bad guys in black hats to bad guys … they are not as similar as they sound.   So, I set out to write a mystery with some thrills. I wanted the who-done-it component to play a large role. I also wanted to push the boundaries and shock readers a little.     Best Laid Plans   When I started The Unthinkable, Flint was the hero. Yet somehow, Michaela refused to take a backseat. No matter how much I tried to push her aside, she insisted on a starring role. So, eventually, I tweaked a couple of things, and Michaela had her story.    It is also worth noting that while the book remained in limbo for several years, Michaela had a different name. A few years after writing the book, I had a daughter who received Michaela’s previous name. When I thought about the horrible things that happened to the character in the book, I decided to change her name to Michaela.   Other changes from the original story to this one includes a deleted sex scene, not NC17, but likely a hard R. Near the climax of the story, Michaela was also rapped. After time, I decided the scene was not necessary for Michaela's arc.    In one early draft, Bryan was in on the crimes, which was revealed in the final chapter. It was mostly there to set up a sequel. However, that is what it felt like, so it did not survive for long.    More with Michaela If you enjoyed the novel and want to read more about Michaela, she plays a significant role in The Chris Morrison series in Secrets Never Stay Buried and Secrets Destroy. I also have a feeling she will make more appearances in future books and perhaps finally get her own sequel.

Inspiration One year I attended a holiday work party at a new hunting resort in a small, low income town in the middle of nowhere. Honestly, I thought I was going to have to navigate by stars instead of GPS to find the lodge.    When I arrived, I was dumbfounded about the scale and luxuries the lodge had. I think it took me about 27 seconds to make the leap that they had to be smuggling drugs to afford the place. This is probably a good time to note, they weren’t. They are good people.    However, I was amazed a couple with no money and not great jobs had been able to build the lodge. I also never dreamed it would survive, but several years later they appear to be doing great. Which makes me happy for them and realize I need to be more a glass is half full kind of guy.   I am also happy, because it gave me an idea for a story that would launch a series about two friends in love with the same woman. After all, I think is required every writer has a love triangle story at some point. On a deeper level, it enabled me to pose a moral question about what you would do to save your life’s dream. Something I still wonder about.   Best Laid Plans     Justin Moore has a song called Backwoods, with a line, “Ain’t no land for sale around here.”   I felt the song’s writer had written it for Austin to start the novel. It seemed like such a country thing to say to an out of town developer. For a long time, it was the first line in the novel.   Eventually, a beta reader told me they felt the book started slow. I wanted to argue because I loved that line. Knowing that I am not a genius, I thought about what they said.    For about two minutes.    Then to show them changing the opening wouldn’t make a difference, I grabbed my laptop and wrote the first chapter in in about five minutes (I type fast and faster when it is good). Once I read it, I knew there was no going back. It is a bummer being wrong.   I’m a discovery writer, meaning I usually know how I want the story to end, and I write until I get there without knowing many or any details. However, I did think about the reason Angie would leave Chris for a long time. I didn’t want it to be something I had read a hundred times. One day while mowing grass it hit me. I loved it from the moment I thought of it. Enough that I left my yard half mowed for the rest of the day so I could type.    Another change a beta reader convinced me of was the man Chris killed shouldn’t be completely innocent. So, he became a minor player in the drug trade to avoid alienating Chris from the reader.    Other edits included removing a graphic sex scene and an old west shootout between Chris and Wyatt at the end. Not having Chris kill Wyatt gave him a chance to complete his arc.    The most significant change was when I started, Chris and Michaela were supposed to get together. As my characters often do, they wouldn’t listen. Chris and Angie kept insisting they should be a couple, and it got to the point, I couldn’t tell them no anymore. I cave to my children in real life too. We all have flaws.

Secrets Destroy

A Chris Morrison Novel | 2

Behind Secrets Destroy - Contains Spoilers

Secrets Destroy is the fastest novel I have written. And it took the longest to settle on a title. There were so many bad choices.    I started the book immediately after I finished Secrets Never Stay Buried and was done in about two months. By the time I completed the first novel in the series, I was so in tune with the characters I didn’t have to think about how they would respond. I remember telling a friend I was starting to dream about Chris and Angie. And I might have named my car after Maria. He replied I needed to get out more. Good advice.    Developing My Process This is the first novel I started listening to music while I typed. I no longer have the playlist, but I remember being hooked on Jason Aldean’s Night Train song. I probably racked up 300 plays on that track getting through the book. I loved the building tempo and line, “A billion stars.” It felt like Shady County to me.    In addition to learning more about how to write a story, I have also looked inward to determine what leads to my best writing. One of my first discoveries was I do my best work when happy. I’m not a person who can pour depression onto the page while experiencing it. Once I am through dark times, I can share them with readers, but not during. Just the way I am.   I also find muses in multiple forms, often entertainment. A great movie, TV show, song, or book usually inspires me to create. Since this novel, I have always created themed playlists for stories and sometimes characters.    When talking about muses, it would be criminal not to mention caffeine. Especially Coco-Cola. Yes, I am addicted to Coke. I limit myself to one 12 oz can of Coke Zero a day, usually flavored with cherry or orange. What can I say? It works for me.    Best Laid Plans    Compared to my two previous stories, this one had the fewest changes. I believe it is because I spent 80,000 odd words in Secrets Never Stay Buried writing myself into this book. Hmm, is that a lesson about writing a series?   There were three changes worth nothing. First, I did rewrite the beginning three or four times. After I had my eyes opened to the slow opening in Secrets Never Stay Buried (which I fixed before releasing), I realized this book started slow, too. I also struggled to find the right setting to introduce Doug. For the longest time, he was a bodyguard for an unkind rich businessman, but I could never get it right.    One night, the book Gods seemed to type the new opening through my fingers, and I haven’t looked back. Or at least not since my beta readers agreed. Self-doubt and writing seem to go together more often than peanut butter and jelly.    The next significant change was that Coronado did not appear until page 42 in the first draft. In revision, I moved this up to jump start the tension.    The last change was Miguel didn’t show up in the original manuscript until the final fight with Chris. I reached the scene and realized I needed a notable foe. In hindsight, it seems impossible to have missed that for a couple of hundred pages. Sadly, it is not the first time I have missed something obvious. Anyway, I wrote the scene as if he had always been there and inserted him throughout the book during the second draft.    Decisions   I know I made some unpopular choices with a couple of my characters in this book. I love the anti-hero concept, but there are some traits that make me who I am. Call it my code. I believe in family, which Chris does, too. However, he struggles to accept that families often don’t remain the picture-perfect representation you find in happy TV shows, and you must love the family you have at that time. I also feel people who break certain rules need to be punished, even if it is not against the law and are characters you might cheer for.     I’m excited to return to Pine Ridge to conclude the Coronado and Chris story line, and hopefully, you are too.

A Whisperville Novel

Family First

Max Church went to prison 6,578 days ago. He knows because he counted every single day while planning his revenge. Something he feels entitled to for being locked up for defending his sister. A justified act in his mind. Now, he is out and ready to settle scores.

Max’s childhood best friend, Chance Waite, is a rule follower. The type of guy who sits at a red light at 1 a.m. with no one in sight. That is, he would if he was ever out that late, which he isn't because his family is the most important thing to him. When his family’s security and happiness are threatened, he has to discover if he is willing to break his principles to give them what he feels they deserve.

To most outsiders, Daniel Walker has it all. Beauty queen wife. Happy daughter. Fast cars. Mansion on the lake. He is also broke, and willing to do whatever it takes to maintain his lifestyle.

The paths of these three men collide in the peaceful, remote village of Whisperville, where not everyone can live happily ever after.
